Twinline Dairies Discovers a Free-Stall Sand-Saving System That Keeps Cows Happy and Saves Money to Boot
Two Georgia farmers have discovered an economical solution to an age-old problem with free-stall sand bedding: keeping the sand where it belongs. James Brown estimates that he and his business partner are saving 30 to 50 TONS of sand per week since installing the new Agriweb® soil confinement system in their 800-bed free-stall barn. And their cows love it.
Like all successful dairy farmers, James Brown and his business partner, Larry Brown (no relation), look for the best combination of comfort, cleanliness and economics to house their herd.
The partners milk 900 cows on their 800-acre farm, Twinline Dairies, in Dewey Rose, Georgia. They've tried sand, mattresses, and lime bedding in the farm's 800 free-stall beds, and have found that sand is the best method to keep their cows content and healthy. Yet they had given up on using sand because they just couldn't keep it in the beds.
When James Brown walked the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie, Georgia, in October of 1999, he found a solution that makes free-stall sand bedding both practical and economical--a new product called the Agriweb® soil confinement system.
"When I saw the Agriweb® system, it just made sense to me," says James Brown. An expandable honeycomb structure, the Agriweb® system has individual cell compartments which confine sand in-fill. "We started installing it and saw right away that it kept a significant amount of sand in place." All 800 of the farm's free stalls now contain the sand-saving system.
"We're still using 50 tons of sand per week, but I feel it would take 80 to 100 tons per week without it." Brown continues. "At roughly $14 per ton, that's easily a savings of over $20,000 per year. And the system itself was very economical to install compared to others we've seen."
